Review article: the effectiveness of group and self-help hypnotherapy for irritable bowel syndrome
For my BSc (Hons) dissertation, I conducted a review of the research evidence for treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with hypnotherapy. My review was published in Alimentary, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, a peer-reviewed journal that specialises in high quality, clinically relevant original research and review articles in gastroenterology and hepatology.
In a nutshell, my review concluded that group hypnotherapy for adults and self-help hypnotherapy (audio recordings) for children, are effective treatments for mild to moderate IBS. Further research is needed to determine their effectiveness for those with severe IBS.
