Symptoms can become quieter
As the cycle loses strength, thoughts may arise less frequently, anxious sensations may settle more easily and urges to check, avoid or perform rituals may become less compelling.
The LIBERATE Approach™
The LIBERATE Approach is the framework that guides how I work with OCD, intrusive thoughts and anxiety.
I developed it over many years of working with clients and bringing together the therapeutic ideas and methods I found most helpful. It connects understanding with experience, compassion with challenge, and symptom improvement with the wider aim of living more freely.
Why I developed LIBERATE
Many people begin therapy with considerable insight. You may already recognise that a thought is intrusive, know that a ritual has become excessive or understand that reassurance only settles the doubt temporarily.
That understanding matters — but it may not be enough to change the automatic feeling, urge or response.
The LIBERATE Approach helps us connect what you understand intellectually with what your mind and body learn through experience. Together, we’ll explore the patterns that keep the difficulty going and create opportunities for something different to be learned.
As the pattern loosens

A wider view of change
It is entirely understandable to want relief from anxiety, intrusive thoughts and compulsive urges. And yet, trying to force thoughts and feelings away can become part of what keeps them powerful. The paradox is that the more closely you monitor whether a thought has gone or whether you feel better yet, the more attention and importance the experience is given.
Together, we’ll work on loosening that struggle. As you become less caught up in fighting, checking or responding to every internal experience, thoughts and feelings often begin to settle more naturally.
LIBERATE therefore holds two closely connected aims: helping symptoms become less frequent, intense and disruptive, while also helping you regain confidence and take part more fully in your life.
As the cycle loses strength, thoughts may arise less frequently, anxious sensations may settle more easily and urges to check, avoid or perform rituals may become less compelling.
When difficult experiences do arise, you can become increasingly able to recognise the pattern and choose what to do next without being automatically drawn back into it.
With less time spent monitoring, checking and analysing, it becomes easier to feel calm, present and engaged in your relationships, activities and ordinary daily life.
The eight LIBERATE ingredients
LIBERATE is made up of eight connected therapeutic ingredients. They are not a set of steps that everyone must complete in the same order.
We’ll draw on different elements at different times, depending on your experiences, your goals and what is most likely to help.
I’ll help you develop a useful understanding of how anxiety, intrusive thoughts and compulsive responses operate. We’ll focus on explanations that help you move forward, rather than giving you more information to analyse.
Together, we’ll identify the pattern keeping you stuck — including what triggers it, where your attention goes and the checking, reassurance, avoidance or mental review that may provide short-term relief while strengthening the doubt over time.
We’ll approach the pattern without blame or shame. Kindness doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine or reassuring the fear away. It means learning not to fight yourself while you decide how you want to respond.
Where appropriate, I’ll help you use exposure and response prevention to approach uncertainty, difficult sensations or meaningful activities while reducing the responses that maintain the cycle.
This will be collaborative and carefully paced. It isn’t about forcing you through the most frightening thing you can imagine or waiting for your anxiety to disappear. It is about creating experiences through which something new can be learned.
We’ll strengthen your confidence in your ability to respond, recover and continue when life feels difficult.
Resilience doesn’t mean remaining calm or unaffected. It means knowing that you can adjust, seek support and find your way back when things don’t go as planned.
You’ll practise allowing thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations to be present without automatically fighting, solving or obeying them.
At the same time, we’ll consider what the situation in front of you genuinely requires and help you respond flexibly. Allowing doesn’t mean passively accepting everything that happens; adapting means remaining able to solve real problems, make changes and respond to your circumstances.
Together, we’ll work towards relying less on perfect certainty or repeated reassurance.
Self-trust isn’t knowing that everything will turn out well. It is developing confidence that you can make a good-enough decision, respond to what happens and learn or repair if necessary.
The wider purpose of the work is to help you return to living. You don’t need to wait until every symptom has disappeared before becoming more present in your relationships, work, interests, rest and the things that give your life meaning.
As symptoms become less dominant, more of your attention and energy can return there naturally.
Responsive, not prescriptive
LIBERATE provides a shared direction for our work, but it doesn’t assume that everybody needs the same techniques or should move at the same pace.
I bring clinical knowledge and experience; you bring the lived knowledge of yourself and your life. We’ll develop our understanding together and adjust it as we learn more about what helps, what gets in the way and what matters most to you.
I’ll explain the purpose behind what we do and invite you to notice what fits. Therapy should feel collaborative and purposeful — not like a treatment being imposed on you.
Our work may draw on
The next step
Meaningful change takes willingness, practice and patience. You may be invited to notice familiar patterns, experiment with different responses and continue practising what you’re learning between sessions.
You won’t be expected to do that perfectly — or alone. I’ll work alongside you, helping you understand the purpose of what we do and adapting the work as we learn more about what you need.
I’m not currently accepting new clients, but you can join my priority list and I’ll contact you when I can offer a new-client appointment, either in Plymouth or online across the UK.
Joining the list doesn’t commit you to booking.
